SHAKTI PEETHAS IN SRI LANKA
There are 2 shaktipeethas in sri lanka.But the shakti peetha in jaffna peninsula is regarded as one of the 52 shaktipeethas while the one in trincomalee is regarded as one of the 18 shakti peethas mentioned by adi shankaracharya.
1]NAGAPOSHANI AMMAN TEMPLE (NAINATIVU , JAFFNA)
  • .This shaktipeetha is located in Jaffna disrtict of Jaffna peninsula in Sri lanka.To reach this temple one has to go to Kurikkatuvan from jaffna by road and from there take a ferry to Nainativu island.
  • It is believed that anklets of Mata sati had fallen here. her Bhairav is called as "Rakshaseshwar(Nayanair)".The murti of goddess is believed to have been consecrated and worshipped by lord Indra.The goddess is also known as Indrakshi(Nagapooshani/Bhuvaneswari).
  • The pilgrimage to this temple can be made throughout the year.However most popular time to visit the temple is during the 16 day long Mahotsavam(Thiruvizha festival) that is celebrated in annually in the tamil month of Aani(June/July).

  • 2] TRINCOMALEE (THIRUKONESHWARAM TEMPLE)
    • It is located in trincomalee district on the eastern coast of sri lanka.It can be reached easily from colombo and other major cities of sri lanka as it is a well known resort/tourist place.
    • The goddess is known as "shankari".The shaktipeetha is located in the temple premises of thirukoneshwaram temple.The temple is dedicated to the lord thirukoneshwaram which is regarded as bhairav of the goddess shankari.
    • According to "ashtadash peeth stotram"written by adi shankaracharya , "groin" part of mata sati has fallen here.
